Dev Blog #17: Chance

There's a lot that I want to talk about, but I don't exactly have a lot of time right now. We are knee deep in NaNoRenO, and things are pretty hectic right now. However, I had the urge to write something here for people to read. I've been having urges like this for a while, but this one came to me and just… wouldn't get out of my mind.

I tentatively called this dev blog 'chance' because chance has been a large factor of my life as of late. Sure, you can link everything to distinct choices that I or other people have made, but even those choices can be linked back to chance. I just happened to play Katawa Shoujo on that specific day. I just happened to join in an RP in a certain timeframe. I just happened to meet the person who'd bring me aboard Watercress, someone who would be a great friend of mine to this day.

I just so happened to run for Studio Director, even when I was desperately afraid of what it could entail. People just so happened to like me enough to support me.

People just happened to see Echo and I speak at the VN conference… and we just so happened to get the dream team for NaNoRenO.

It's surreal. I just… I can't believe how far we've come. We used to be a group of random people riding the high of a KS playthrough. Now? We're a fully established studio who's very steadily becoming a real force within the EVN industry.

Three years ago, I was a depressed kid in highschool who had no idea if I'd survive past 18. Now? I'm a creative force and the leader of the best damned team I ever could have wished for.

Who would have known that we'd all meet? That we'd all come together in the manner that we have?

Sure, things haven't always been beautiful. Sure, sometimes we have pains, and sometimes we make decisions that we wish we never had to. But, in the end, the good outweighs the bad, and we find ourselves doing… creating things that we find beautiful.

We never had to sell our soul in the process, either. We're still undeniably good. We care. We are here to have fun, and we are here to prove to the world that EVNs and freeware games can be good - that art doesn't have a pricetag.

We're still friends, and that's what I love about Watercress.

Even if I've lost my fair share of friends in this journey, I'm constantly making and meeting new ones. Our NaNoRenO team is roughly 28 people strong, and most of that number is made of people who aren't even Watercress members.

It makes me want to cry sometimes (and sometimes I actually do), knowing that we have such a strong community out there, willing to help and support each other.

Not the Watercress community (that too), but the EVN community. Everyone's taken on so much more than we ever needed them to. They've all come together to make my dream a reality. They're telling my story for NaNo, in a manner that I never could have on my own.

I'm forever in the debt of those who surround me, and I'm afraid that I'll never be able to repay them.

Thing is, though? They don't want to be repaid. They are here because they want to be, not because they are obligated. We all came together to tell a fantastic story, to send a message to the world that we all deeply care about.

It's beautiful, and I'm so, so proud of everyone that I've had the pleasure of working with.

I'm so happy that I can say these four words, these words that seem so small but mean oh so much...

I'm proud of you.

Very nicely put. You don't need to be in dept to us, most of us are in debt to you guys. To what you guys have created. A community and stories that would have never existed other wise. It is just nice to see everyone putting in work to make the community and the world better, in what ever way they can. And this is the community that has ben created because of it. We are here to support you guys on your way to making/doing what you love.  smile  -Zork

I wanted to go back and comment that, uhh, THANK YOU. Sometimes this job gets really rough (more than sometimes), so hearing this actually makes us go crazy in excitement. Thanks a whole bunch!
